Country Garden - St Issey
On our initial visit this property had only lawns and hedges. The owner wanted a garden with multiple easily-accessed flower beds and plenty of places to sit and relax. Planting needed to be able with the local salt laden winds and the extremely poor soil.
Taking note of the conditions we decided to work with the soil and aspect to create a Mediterranean inspired garden using shrubs and trees that enjoy free draining soil and have no need for huge additions of soil-improving composts.
We created curving beds throughout the space that had easy access from both sides. Using rosemary, lavender, teuchrium, pines and olive trees we built a resilient framework that could cope with long periods of drought without requiring irrigation.
Whilst these shrubs provided the structural framework we added in ornamental grasses to bring movement and robust perennials to bring colour throughout the season.
